The MX548R takes the 500 Series head up to a 48 in rotor and puts a rake in the frame, for crews clearing ground where the job does not end when the standing material is down. The rake tines are built in rather than bolted to a bracket, so the same pass that mulches can also pull rock and roll logs clear without swapping tools or bringing a second machine onto the site.

The body is a step up as well. Baumalight builds it in AR400, which is the same weight as mild steel and considerably harder, and that matters on a head whose rake teeth are in the ground taking impacts the rotor never sees.

The mount is the second decision to make, because an excavator does not have one standard attachment face the way a skid steer or a tractor does. Selection Notes

• Match the mulcher to the carrier by class first: tracked excavators from 8.5 to 20 ton and wheeled excavators from 10 to 22 ton carry this model.
• Case drain is critical on this model. Confirm the carrier has one before ordering.
• Units ship with P5000 planer teeth fitted. Ripper teeth are the alternative style for below-grade work and in stony ground, and both styles are bolt-in.
• Hydraulic couplers are ordered separately because the face varies by carrier. Confirm the face against your carrier before ordering.
• Mount Option changes what arrives, and with Excavator Weight Class it is the second real decision to make.
