The Baumalight WB44 is a walk behind stump grinder with its own 13 HP Honda engine, its own wheels and its own handlebar, working with a 13 in wheel of twelve carbide tipped teeth and taking stumps up to 20 in across. It is the one machine in this range that mounts to nothing, so it is bought by crews that want stump work done without tying up a skid steer, and by those that have no carrier at all.

Power reaches the wheel through a double banded V-belt and a centrifugal clutch, and the clutch is the part worth understanding before buying. The operator revs the engine with the action bar, the clutch engages once the engine reaches grinding speed, and releasing the bar idles the engine and disengages the head, so the wheel is not turning while the machine is being positioned or moved. A marked emergency stop on the operator panel cuts power to the engine outright.

The wheel carries twelve round carbide tipped teeth with concave tips, and each turns up to three times to a fresh edge, so one set does the work of three before replacement; the tool holders bolt on, so a damaged holder is changed in the field without special tools. Debris exits to the side from behind the wheel, which keeps the path ahead of the tires clear so the operator can keep feeding forward, and a wheel lock in front of the operator locks one wheel down so the machine pivots smoothly through the work rather than wandering.

At 29.75 in wide it passes a standard gate, the handle folds for transport and storage and its height adjusts, and four rubber grips give the operator more than one working position. The wheels are not driven, so the operator walks the machine into position on 15 in pneumatic tires that roll over a finished lawn without tearing up the turf, and integrated handles and lifting hooks make loading and unloading easier. For a landscape or tree crew whose stump work is occasional and whose access is tight, this is the machine that does it without a carrier on site.
